Default Antenna Question

I have a 76 and I am getting a new cover and want to take the antenna off to create the hole. I read different things and thought once I unscrew the chrome cap there was a another bolt I needed to take off. Do I just take a 9/16 and take off the bottom piece or just use some vice grips and twist it back and forth. I did a some wd40 after this picture

Been a while, but I believe once that piece you're holding is off, the antenna is supposed to come off.

As said above, once you remove the little nut in your hand, the mast "should" pull out of the antenna body. The bottom of the antenna's mast goes into the antenna body where the exposed threaded area of the body is (the larger nut below it holds the antenna body into the car). From the rust, and the general condition of the antenna body, that mast hasn't been removed in quite a while and may not be to happy about coming loose.

I'd wrap an old towel around the base & start a good long WD soaking...
