This is about me being stupid, and trying to fix the situation, so apologies in advance :-)
1970 manual. I took out the ball of the shifter, the spring and the post that goes inside the shifter. When I re-installed it, instead of putting the spring at the top, I dropped it inside the shaft without thinking. Will it fall into the transmission or it's just sitting at the bottom of the handle? Can it cause any damage if I leave it there?Any suggestion how to pull it out? Can I just maybe leave it there and get a replacement spring?
Don’t feel stupid, I did the same thing years ago. Take a piece of solid gauge wire, 12 or 14 and bend a hook on the end, the hook should be small maybe 1/8 inch, use a needle nose pliers. Insert the hook into the round shifter shaft and you should hook the spring.
i believe you need to get the spring out of the shifter. Look at a vendor catalog to see how all the shift linkage parts are installed.
