Hi guys, yes I’m still working on my 73.
I want to pull the regulator out and clean it up. I got sand in there from blasting a while ago. I may have heard something about that spring being tricky. I don’t want to disassemble it at this point just get it out of the door. Any tips on how to get it out?
I only have direct experience with power window regulators, but think they're not too different regarding removal. As long as you leave the crank "housing" in place (top right in pic below), the regulator gear and spring should stay meshed and safe for removal.
Do be careful if you decide to remove the crank housing as the springs are very strong. Use a vise to hold the regulator; the hole between the spring and crank will align with a matching hole in the gear - place a bolt through the two pieces to secure them before disassembling the crank housing.

Good advice thanks.
So I can remove the assembly complete
(crank housing and all) without unleashing that spring?

Yes. You know you'll have to disengage the window rollers and tracks and all — and if you are going to this effort, you might as well clean the door lock/release assembly, change out the outside door handles if they're sagging, regrease the vertical tracks, replace the rollers, ... 😂
Got it out. Shot the bolt heads with orange paint to mark where the bolts were in the slot so I can get them close to where they were when I put the regulator back in. This part was easy. Getting the glass out was a pain and I’m dreading putting the glass back in.
I found it easier to reinstall the glass than remove it! Not sure why, maybe it was because I didn't have a complete understanding of all the parts and how they worked. The issue I had, as I recall, is that the roller for the short track (just above the lock rod) kept coming out of either end. Another help is to unscrew and unsnap the outer rubber/stainless trim on the exterior at the window opening slot. That narrow piece actually gives a lot more space to insert the window and its hardware.
