I have changed the one in my 78 by tilting the wheel down as far as you can and removing the speedo cluster. No need to drop the column. Once it is removed you can see there isn’t a lot of room to work in there and the switch needs to be in the right spot to get it all back together. While you are in there verify that the small ground wire from the switch to the frame is connected properly. Do you know how to remove the ****?
Thank you , I appreciate it. I will give it a try. I’m hoping it is the switch..my problem is all the lights work except for the headlights, high and low beams do not work..thanks again for the help
The 78 service manual talks about removing left air distribution duct, remove attaching screws and move the instrument cluster rearward, disconnect speedo cable and electrical connector and remove cluster. Then remove the two screws and pull it away to get to the lighting switch.

That video makes the switch removal look pretty simple. But, it's perhaps telling that the dash pad is already torn at the top left where it has been pulled backwards, something that you'd have to be very careful not to do I'd say.
The Corvette Magazine article is good, but I'm thinking my hands would need to shrink a bit to do as easily as it is to read it!😄 But, I suspect that my be easier than going in via the instrument cluster hole?
I did this a few days ago. I went in from under the dash by removing the duct & the 2 screws on the edge of the dash panel. I recommend removing drivers seat first. Space is extremely uncomfortable & cramped. Trying to get your arms & head under & behind the dash is a challenging. You can’t check the ground wire from here either. I’m 5’8” & 150lbs. I can get work in very tight places. Anyone much bigger than me is in for a very long day. The video in this thread doesn’t show everything. Following it will tear up your dash. Take a close look at the one in video. The only good tip was him pulling out the **** to parking light setting first. Then push the release button and pull the **** out. My new switch didn’t solve my problem. I need to go back in & check the ground. I’m using kanvasman’s method next time. I think you should use it too. Good luck!
i’m not sure about the headlight switch, but I was able to get my wiper switch out which I think I had access to the headlight switch by removing the tach and speedometer which I was able to do by pushing the column down about an inch and then it came out.
