Default Plastic Headlight adjustment part

I am rebuilding the headlights of my 1971. Regarding the light plastic adjustment parts, the AIM and Motor Trend headlight rebuilding article both show a curved extension from the base of the plastic that wraps around a protrusion on the frame casting. The rebuild kit I purchased (as well as most others I have seen) do not have the curved extension.

Can anyone tell me the purpose of that extension and whether it is necessary for proper functioning of the headlights?

The headlamp bucket rests on those 3 pads that those curved arms go out and cover. It provided a "slippery" surface to allow the buckets to move around on as they are aligned. You'll note they also added a flag for 101 lubricant on them

They are not really needed, add a dab of grease to the end of the casting where they would be for the bucket to slip on. Once they headlamps are aligned you'll not likely ever need to move them again

(also make sure you get the buckets in the correct order, it matters)
