Default New seats?

So I’ve have my 78 for about a week now. And after some minor repairs that I found that needed done I started looking at what needs upgrading first. There is one clear thing that stands out. The seats! Not torn or anything but they lay so far back I have blocks of wood under the backs to prop them up. The original design seems much to be desired. So after some research it seems the c5 seats are a good option? Or do you recommend seats for the year from a company such as top flight? I’m not concerned with an original look at the car is already highly modified

If they lay that far back clearly your missing the adjustable bump stops. Perhaps the design isn't all that bad. Perhaps your missing parts or something is broken. Just Perhaps.
I find the seats in my 77 to be very comfortable. And seat backs are adjustable.

I used 2012 GTI seats in my C10 project. Got them from a local salvage yard. Paid $250-$300. Great seats. They came in a kind of a gray color but I used fabric paint to change them to black.

I do have them but they slip off the base where they contact as soon as I sit in the seat. Maybe the pivot point is wore out and to sloppy?

I’ve been thinking about this the last few days. My husband is 6’4” and my son is almost 6’. Neither one of them has any head support whatsoever with the current seats in my 81. I’m 5’7” and if I kind of slouch down in the seat, about half my head is on the seat back. So it’s a safety concern for me if anyone were to hit us. I don’t have any power anything on the seats, so I don’t know if I could swap them out for something else, and searching the threads hasn’t gotten me far. I appreciate the link to the other thread, and I’d never have thought to look at other vehicle seats. Thanks!

It sounds like the bottom metal seat frame structure, where the rear bumper adjusters are attached, could be cracked and broken, which is not an uncommon occurrence being that a lot of people "fall" into the car rather than lower themselves. The metal tears where the arrows are in the pic below. The holes right next to the arrow heads are where the bumper/angle adjusters screw in.

Do you notice the same thing on the passenger side? Somewhat of a fix is to swap the passenger seat bottom for the driver's. The seat bottoms are interchangeable from side to side, it's only the backs that have the shoulder belt that are side dependent after the covers are on.

76-78 don't run the belts through the seats. I'll try to get some pictures of the seat back tilt adjusters later.

OK, some pics.

76-78 seats look like this. Just making sure we are on the same page.

One of these on each side of the seat bottom.

And one of these with the rubber bumpers on each side of the lower edge of the seat back. These can be adjusted out quite a way and actually get the seat back bolt upright. Which likely wouldn't lock there and I never really tried. But they screw out a long way. Of course you are meant to get both of them adjusted about the same.

yep mine has all the parts except the rubber. I actually ordered a kit that has all new parts including the pivot point. I think the bushings are worn and it’s causing enough movement to slip off the back

Good luck with that then. Perhaps if you get the seat backs fixed up you won't hate your seats so much. At the very least should buy you some time.

buying time is the idea. They are comfortable enough but I’d like seats with a headrest in the event of an accident
