I’m seeing 74-77 corvette belts for sale both used and new. Some with single retractor and some without. My belts on my 77’ are toast so I’m looking for replacements. Will 78-82 belts work for a 77? Looking for some guidance on year interchangeability.

thanks as always
No, 78-82 belts are single retractor with a one piece belt and a sliding male buckle like modern belts. The 78-82 retractor mounts in the B-pillar above your shoulder, instead of in the rear compartment. The 74-77 are dual retractor with one in the rear compartment and one under the seat. There's no place to securely attach the 78-82 retractor in the B-pillar of earlier years, and if you could come up with a way to securely mount them in the rear compartment where the 77 belts originally went, I think the belt would be too short to use.
There were three variations of the belts used between 74-77. 74-77 coupes came with the a two retractor, two belt system where both belts were sewed onto a single male buckle. 74-75 convertibles came standard just a single retractor and single lap belt, and shoulder belts as an option. When shoulder belts were ordered on a 74-75 convertible they came with two retactors, and two belts, but instead of both belts being sewed to a single male buckle, the lap belt had a male buckle with a pin on it and the should belt had a slotted end that attached to the pin on the lap belt's male buckle. In a coupe when you put the belt on you were automatically wearing the shoulder belt, while on convertibles with shoulder belts you had to buckle the shoulder buckle separately.
