I hope you're all doing well. I'm making this thread in the hopes that someone who has dealt with SMOG issues in the past can help. I recently went to get my 82 SMOG tested and my "Fuel Evaporative Controls Functional" failed. Has anyone else dealt with this issue, and if so, is this a repair I can likely diagnose and do myself? Please let me know. I appreciate all of your assistance over the years. Your kindness and guidance has not gone unnoticed.
If the cap tested good then it has to be the line from the tank to the front of the car-it is rubber in several sections.I have pulled the rubber line at the charcoal can and hooked up the air compressor to it and then listened for where the air was leaking out.
Also sniff the charcoal cannister to see if it smells like old or raw fuel inside it. you can rebuild/recharge the cannister with a charcoal pack while you are testing the cannister vacuum vlave as another member suggested.
Another area to check is the medal vapor line that runs from the back of the gas tank to the vapor canister on the drivers side. I had a friend who's vapor line, running from the back of the gas tank, near the rear drivers tire rusted. He kept failing the gas fume leak at the gas tank during a CA smog fume test. We were able to find the leak in the vapor line above the driver side rear tire. We secured the leak with a rubber hose and tighten down with hose clamps. 50 year old car - gas vapor lines do rust and cause fume leaks.

I had this exact same problem on my '97 Jeep Wrangler. I replaced the line, and it fixed the code.
