The carpet is not the factory carpet, I replaced it a number of years ago, but as I remember it is about the same as the factory. The blue tape was to hold it in place as I was sliding in and out of the car. I removed it before reinstalling the sill plates.
You really should leave a good bit of carpet underneath the sill plate. Having a few extra inches can Hurt. Remember that once you cut the carpet you can’t add it back. I left mine so it goes almost the width of the sill plate, never hurts to have extra carpet for Shrinkage or fitment issues.
