Help with 1971 Heat Control in Console Installation
Trying to install heater control assembly in my non-AC 1971 coupe. After market console with original vent door lever bracket. I can get it to sit into its final position but that last extra push down seems to push it out of alignment. It almost seems to be binding on something and it twists the control unit making alignment with the shifter plate impossible. I control unit is a OEM part. I even disconnected all vacuum hoses, electrical connectors and control cable to the heater box. It gets better but it still seems to be binding somewhere in the back where I can’t see. I added power windows so there is the power window relay directly to the left rear location on the transmission tunnel. I even remove that and something is not right with final alignment of the control assembly. Can anyone tell from my photos if the new wiring harness routing could be an issue. Boy,I thought the dash and center gauge cluster was tough!
Have you tried installing the two small screws that hold the control panel in. The controller is quite hard to fit with all the things attached to it . But once it was secured down I didn’t have any alignment issues with the trim plate.
With the two screws in place and the male and female pin/hole engaged the vent door lever bracket also ***** or twist to the right which now makes getting the upper shifter plate screw in a problem. I have a bora scope on order. If the unit still ***** with all the electrical, power window relay removed, heater door cable and vacuum lines disconnected, Im leaning towards the main electrical harness is in the way of the heater/vent control sitting in its proper position and it needs to be shoved/molded over to the right. Being that the new harness it is very stiff. Thinking of using the heat gun on the lowest setting to help with the remolding/repositioning I also can feel with my fingers then fiber optic harness up above where the heater/vent control unit sits and thought that maybe I hooked that up backwards but I check with a flash light this morning shinning into the left front directional lens and the left fiber optic light on the console lite up so that confirms that it is installed properly.
I think I may have just answered my own question. The electrical harness shown in the middle of my photo’s needs to be routed to the far left hand side of the shifter console. It’s clear as day in the GM installation manual. I had photo’s of the disassemble process but not of the wiring harness routing. Fortunately I was able to reroute it this evening without the removal of my shifter console. I had to remove and reroute some of the electrical wires and vacuum hoses but I believe I’m on the right track now. The power window relay fastening hex headed screw is a bugger to get back in due to the limited amount of space to operate and the ground wire that needs to be attached to it.
I’ll be tearing the whole center console apart on my newly acquired ‘76. It’s not too bad after doing it a couple times, but it’s still a dreaded project.
