Default Engine & 4 speed trans removal

Hello all,

I’m removing the L82 engine and Super T10 4-speed out out of my 1976 C3 this weekend and I’d like to get some tips. Most of the videos online are with all automatic transmission.

1. Do you guys recommend removing them still mated together, or separated? I need them both out eventually.

2. I have a leveler, where do I attach the 4 points of the chains to the engine?

3. How do I undo the trans linkages from the drivers side? Every time I try to loosen the bolts I shift it in gear and I don’t want to break anything inside the transmission while trying to loosen the bolts.

Yesterday I removed:
  • All the fluids
  • Radiator, shroud, fan, clutch
  • Radiator hoses
  • Alternator
  • Power steering pump
  • AC compressor
  • Motor mount bolts
  • Oil pressure sender
  • Distributor shield (but not distributor)
  • Unbolted exhaust from manifolds
  • Unbolted air pump from PS exhaust
  • Starter wires removed
  • Battery cables
  • Engine ground strap
  • Trans mount bolts
  • Z bar
  • Accelerator cable

What else do I need to look out for today? I know speedometer cable, driveshaft, shifter, water temp sensor, but I’m sure there’s going to be more.

Thanks, this is quite the adventure this weekend!

You should also remove the distributor, otherwise it may hit the firewall when you tilt the motor and transmission.
I attached the leveler chains to the front and back bolt holes in the heads.
Also, I assume you removed the hood.

FWIW, I pulled my '69 350 engine a few weeks ago. I removed the 4-speed transmission, clutch assembly, and bellhousing before I pulled the engine because it just made lifting the engine out easier for me. I also removed the distributor to avoid hitting the firewall as Roadster71 also suggested. I removed my starter and solenoid, fuel pump, inner and outer plug heat shields, and exhaust manifolds too before pulling the engine. Not necessary to get the engine out but peace of mind for me - fewer things in the way. My car has AC so I removed all that as well. Took my fan blade and fan clutch off too.

I had the flywheel and pressure plate professionally balanced while I had it out of the car. Mine wasn't off by much but it was off balance slightly and now it's perfectly balanced together and marked so I can put them back together just as they were when they were balanced and adjusted.

What is your hoist's reach? My Harbor Freight 2-ton hoist extends to 62" and all of that is needed.
You won't be able to come in from over the nose with any hoist with less than a ~72"-84" reach (too deep), so remove either front wheel and come in from that side. Of course if you have a gantry crane all of this is moot.
