Default Install new carpet 1971 Coupe

I am redoing my entire interior in my 1971 Coupe.

All the carpet is out, but I have a questions.
Do i need to remove all the old glue, and carpet fibers that are stuck to the glue? And if so, what is the best method. I have tried scrapping it out, and its not a lot of fun.

Can I use a chemicals to remove it? Like GOOF? or something that dissolves it without hurting the fiberglass floor pan.

Thank you in advance,

You probably don't have to take it all down. Remove and high spots. A heat gun will soften up the glue and a paint scraper will get it off. Maybe even run a orbital sander over it when you are done. I don't know how much is actually glued down in a 71, but in my 78 there wasn't really a lot. I don't think it needs glue under your feet. ON the 78 it was really only the wall between the seats and the sotrage compartments. And the back wall itself.

Also...if the new carpet is 'Trim to fit"...always leave at least an inch extra all around the edges of the new carpet. As you push it into place and it conforms to the floorpan the extra inch will begin to disappear.

It is best to leave the carpet inside the car on a summer day. You want to get the new carpet hot so that it will bend to fit your car. You really would be wise to search for step by step instructions.
Use scratch awls to find the holes in the floor where the bots go. Then use a pencil soldering iron to make the holes.

This video may help you. He has a few other carpet related vids as well. One vid for the rear compartment and one for the storage bins.
