I had to cut a small access hole in my early 77’ passenger t top due to what sounded like old dirt and pieces rattling around. I ended up finding this part inside. It must have come loose because I have no idea how it would’ve gotten inside. I looked at my assembly manual and numerous vendor sites and I have not been able to locate what the heck it is. First thought was it was the trim piece that joins the front stainless trim and side pieces but after researching it doesn’t seem like that’s it. Here is a picture, anybody know what it is ?
on my 78 there are strips of steel imbedded into the outside edge of the rubber weatherstripping. That metal piece is screwed down into the top itself and there are adjacent screws to move the weatherstripping in or towards the outside edge of the top. I believe that piece is one of the reinforcements that the weather stripping is screwed into. I know from replacing my weatherstripping that the screws will rust into the piece you have and sometimes drilling them out is the only option. But when you do that the piece usually is worthless. If you were to take the weatherstripping off I think you will find the screws I am talking about ( sorry if it isn't clearer) and come across one of those areas missing the piece you are holding.
