Hello. My question is if the existing stock coil bracket on a 69 s.b. can simply be bent enough to fit a Pertronix coil or does somethin else have to used in place. Thanks in advance for your answers
I would simply bend it carefully and possibly use a longer pinch screw to hold the slightly larger diameter ignition coil. If you are not comfortable or it requires permanent changes to the bracket then go to an auto parts store and they might have a universal coil mounting bracket. Summit or Jeg's will have options for the specific coil you have as an option. The original design Corvette parts are still likely available for your specific application, ZIP has them for $25 and they were used by both BB and SB engines.
Ignition coils mounted in the stock location are exposed to lots of heat and vibration. They have been failing faster and more often but many of us blame that on the quality of the coils. It is very possible that the heat and vibration are helping push them to an earlier failure.
MSD suggested that I re-mount the ignition coil someplace cooler without the excess vibration made by the engine. My next coil will be a newer Epoxy coil mounted on the firewall or even better inside the passengers compartment under the dashboard. I have been through several MSD coils and the tech support people at MSD want to blame it on something I am doing. They also recommend the fire wall mounted, more expensive ignition coil.
