Hey guys! The starter went out in my 74 and I was wondering if anyone had some opinions. I want to go to a mini starter, but my car has three wires to the “R” terminal. I read that these are for my distributor. Wondering if you guys knew any mini starters that have all three posts, or a way to wire up a two post starter.
2nd question:
After some googling, I think I have an HEI distributor. I’ll link a picture.
is this HEI? If so, can I just wire the positive battery and starter posts and not use any of the wires on the “R” terminal?
Hi, generally the "R" terminal gets only one wire and the large battery terminal gets 2 or 3 wires plus the battery cable. Being that you have the distributor in the picture which is a HEI there's no need to connect anything to the "R" terminal or a need for that terminal. Be sure that you have battery voltage at the distributor battery terminal with the key in both the run and crank positions to ensure that the car is indeed wired for HEI ignition. Be sure that the distributor is powered while checking the voltage.
