Default Harmonic Balancer died?

So had to pull radiator, and get that fixed, and had the frame for it done as well because that’s … least 1/4 gone. But that’s welders problem :>

while he’s doing that I replaced water pump, broke bolt, fixed hole, cleaned up fan, while all that was out I figured I should check timing chain. From what I read that shouldn’t have more than 1/8” play? Yeah least 1/4”, but that’s all oily so I figure that won’t be rusted in place for once :>

but harmonic balancer looks like someone took a hammer to it at some point? I don’t know what effect this would have on the engine, but it was running before I started taking all the things off.

looks like the thing might be coming out of its rubber seal/gasket/thing a teeny bit, but yeah … marks on front…

ded ded?
Hammer marks (probably?)

Side for rubber thing not seeming right (think this is ok side)

It looks pretty crummy. Summit sells them with timings marks out to 60 degrees and marks every 90 degrees to make valve adjustments easier. And there really inexpensive.
Nows the time!

I wouldn’t put that back on my lawn mower!

Looks like time for Powerbond and ATI !!

Is there any brand I should replace with? Don’t want to spend a bunch, but also don’t want to go randomly order something without asking first. If I asked first on diff cover that would saved me soooooo much trouble

Pioneer makes decent replacement (and performance) balancers.

Doesn’t matter if I have a 7” balancer because that one’s 8? It’s a 350. And from everything I’ve seen I also wouldn’t be surprised if that 7” isn’t the original

That I don't know -- I just put a Gen 1, 350 into their search window and came up with a number of them - then chose the first stock one I came across.

The GM parts counter balancer was #6272221 which is/was 8" (and still available from GM).
How much space was there between your current balancer and the timing tab? Could it have accommodated a balancer 1/2" closer to it?

I hear of some guys in the C5 section who put.a smaller balancer for quicker revving, I think.

I went with the Dayco Powerbond. Has good reputation, as well as many others. Any brand is likely better than what you got now.

Be sure to get a new bolt since that old one is surely stretched and worn. ATI, as I mentioned above, has a good one.

Bigger diameter will help smooth the idle...my balancer is solid steel...engine will idle at 500 rpm.
