Hi all, I‘m a brand new member but an old guy. I would like to know if anybody out there know of as how many 1971 LT-1 Coupes with original Radio delete were produced ????
Hi Rewita and welcome aboard! The available production specs that I can find don't break it down that fine. Using the NCRS Corvette Specifications Guide for 1968 - 1982 cars I found the following numbers:
20,496 coupes and 6,508 convertibles were built for a total of 27,004 cars (these numbers vary from the "black book" numbers but I chose to use the NCRS data for comparison)
21,509 cars had mono radios and 3,431 had stereos for a total of 24,940 with radios.
24,940/27,004 = 92.36% with radios, or 7.64% without radios.
There were 1949 LT-1's built and statistcally 7.64% of them had no radios which equates to 149 cars with radio delete.
You could run the same exercise with the black book numbers and they might be different, but likely not by much. I hope you find this helpful from a fellow owner of a '71 LT-1.
Just a reminder back then the radio was an option. If you did check the box a radio was installed if you did not no radio was installed. So it was and option to install not a delete.
There are no records available to determine how many Corvette's of a particular set of options were built, so any number you find or create by playing with percentages is still just a guess. Playing with percentages doesn't take into account that maybe a higher percentage of LT-1's were ordered without a radio because the buyer planned to race it, or maybe because the LT-1 was an expensive option, causing more buyers to chose to skip the radio. It's also quite possible the opposite is true and more cars with base 350's were ordered without a radio because more of those buyers were trying to save money. There's too many variables that go into how people chose to order a car, for just using percentages to be accurate.
As PJO pointed out, the radio was not part of the base equipment in 71 Corvettes so no 71's were "radio delete". We do know there were at least eight 71 LT-1's built without radios because as rvazquez said, the ZR-1 performance package was not available with a radio. It is claimed that there was only one ZR-1 71 convertible built, so if that number is correct we know there was at least one no radio LT-1 convertible built. Beyond that there is no way of knowing how many other no radio LT-1 convertibles (or coupes) were built.
I bought a white/saddle LT1 1971 convertible that was a no-radio car. He ordered it without a radio-so he could put a “better” after-market radio in it. Hacked up the original radio block-off plate to put the aftermarket radio in.
