Lacquer can become very crazed but still polish up like glass. It's a very forgiving but brittle paint. My '72 has what I believe to be original paint; there are many rub-through spots, visible body seams, and crazing all over, but from 20 feet it looks great.
The VIN on your car matches an L-48 Pace Car. Am unsure of the painted trim tag.
Hi I am supposed to purchase a 1978 Pace car tomorrow but I need some help before I pull the trigger to know if certain things are correct
it’s supposed to be all original with 22,000 miles
questions
1) if paint is original is it normal to have a brilliant shine and up close see some paint checking not bad considering the age of original paint
2) the driver side door jam metal data plate is painted black in pictures I’ve seen it black and metal color on other cars
3) it has blue valve covers I’ve seen so many different ones on people cars
4) it has no L48 or L82 emblem again I’ve seen cars both ways
5) the vin 1ZB7L8S902247
I want an original car not a repainted car
any help you can give would be so appreciated!!
I've never seen a trim tag on a bubble window (78-82) C3 that had that much paint left on it. That doesn't mean much, though.
The VIN should be 1Z87L8S902247 (8, not B)
If you care about matching numbers, original engine, and all that, be sure to check. The partial VIN should match, and the suffix code should be one of the L48 options.
Be sure to order the car's dealer invoice (link below). It will take a few days to receive, but will tell you every option that came with the car. From the engine compartment photos, it looks like this one has cruise control, the correct valve covers for an L48, and, unfortunately, an automatic transmission.
with Other posters...you've got an original Pace Car with L48 M38 transmission. options look like cruise control and A/C. Compressor has been replaced. The master cylinder without paint suggests replacement and some attention to the brakes.
Nice looking car! Checks and all. Pace Cars were highly polished when they left the factory. Trim tags left the factory painted. I can see on the trim tag the Pace Car paint codes...19U and 47M...your're good!
the paint on my tag was spotty.. a fingernail removed the rest.. lol .. doesn't stick well
As you may well know, tag paint was applied between the two paint booths, at which point it was riveted to the pillar. It was painted body color without the benefit of primer...thus it peels rather easily.
I'm original owner of a 1978 Silver Anniversary. Still have it and love driving it. 91,000 miles.
Not a pace car, but this model year did not have an L-48 hood emblem, just the L-82. Your engine looks like mine which is an L-48.
Hope you enjoy it if you buy it. Looks nice.
Watch out on those tires... probably not safe if over 10 years old.
