January 1978. 8A on the side rail, (8) 78, (A) January.
January 1968 would have a different type jack.

Manufacture date sometime in the year 1978. My 78 has the 3 digit mfg date on the rivet for a car built in May 78.
Probably late since they were installed in 1979 corvettes. That number before the letter will tell you the year of manufacture.

Edit: should have said mfg in 1978 or later. The number before the H (?) will be the key.

An amazing compendium, sohil. Can't say you don't know jack!

I posted here once before on my jack dilemma. I busted the jack screw on my 69's original jack. Hacksawed it out and tried to find a way to fix it.

I think I tracked down a supplier who is selling look alike jacks and PM'd them (they are a sponsor here) about maybe getting just the jackscrew before it's been swaged (?) but have gotten no reply.

Supplier is KeenParts but no reply via PM. They have a phone number to call directly but haven't gone that route as I haven't free'd up enough time to follow up.

Just FYI and a little tidbit on what I think I know!

Ah crap….I was, but only because I thought that Bill added pics. Didn’t realize it was not his jack. Bills jack is a later style. Jacks changed around Sept 1968. I can’t see your jack completely but if it’s a early 1968 jack, Jan 68, it will look different than Bills. They do look very different visually. Below is a pic of a August 1968 jack. The ends are very different. Shortly after Aug 68 they changed the jack shape to what Bill has above. Not sure of the exact date of the change over but this style was at least until late August 1968. If your jack, dated 8A, looks like this, then it’s from early 1968. If it looks like Bills then it’s from after Sept 1968.
