I have my diff out (1975) and I want to replace the axle seals. I can find lots of info on replacing the pinion seal, but not much at all on axle seals. The best descriptions are "pull old out out, gently tap new one in." I really do not want to put this diff back in and have problems and have to redo it. I have the yokes out, I've checked everything else, I'm ready to remove the seal and put in the new ones. My plan is to pry them out, coat the outside diameter of the new seal with permatex 2, oil the inside (rubber) part of the seal with the diff grease, and reinstall it with a big socket (if i can find it) or gently tap it in.
No. Remove old ,install new seal. I coat both inside and outside of seal with white petroleum jelly. Or a good seal grease. That's all. Just make sure the seal is straight.
Yes, I did check it. I bought a dial indicator and checked the lash as well as the endplay. I can't remember the numbers now, but I believe I put them in a post on the forum. They were fortunately within spec and had no mushrooming and the clips were good.
