Default 1971 Inside door handle

Hello,

For whatever reason, I am having a devil of a time fitting the inside door handle into my drivers door mechanism.
What's the best trick to get the mechanism popped out, so you can slide the handle into the door unit?

I have tried screw drivers, or a pliers, but they get in the way of sliding the handle into the opener?

thank you,

You can remove the door panel if it comes down to that.

No tips except to be careful prying on the pot metal bits of the handle mount as you can break the edges of the piece the handle slides into.

First place the door card on the door. Next I pull on the door handle gently (open) with a large blade screwdriver, then insert a LARGE BLADE screwdriver into the pot metal receiver to keep it extended. The placement of the screwdriver is critical, because the pot metal is very very very fragile. Next slowly remove the screwdriver, as the door handle is slid on.
