I'm getting ready to put a new TKX trans into my 1979, and I'd like to add some insulation in the tunnel first. I know I need the foam "horse collar" that goes around the bellhousing, but as far as I can tell the vendors only list the foil/fiberglass insulation for 68-75 model years. I seems like it would fit the same on a 79, I would just need to install the little fold over metal clips that hold it since my car does not have those (seems like they could be riveted easily). The photo below is the insulation I am talking about.
I have also used DEI "tunnel shield" on a couple other cars and it seems to work pretty well for blocking heat. Its a foil backed fiberglass with a really sticky high temperature adhesive.
What do you have for tunnel insulation on the underside of your C3, and do you like it?
You might be better off using the DEI tunnel shield, since you have prior experience using it. The insulation shield in your photo is for 68-75 and is fairly ridgid. I'm not sure it will fit your 79 or TKX transmission without some modifications?
I have a 1969 with an M-21 4-speed transmission and my tranny insulation shield looks just like the one in your photo and fits very well. It is held in place with retainer clips that are riveted to the transmission tunnel. They are solid rivets. Mine were set using two people. One inside the cabin with a rivet setting tool, one under the car with a rivet gun.
