Default 1976 Headlight Assembly Removal

This is how I was able to remove my headlight assembly. I was NOT able to loosen bolts and angle it through the headlight opening. There are threads that say you can remove the center support and give you room to angle it out. On my early 76 (December build date) the center support (aka the Extension) is not a separate part and is welded to the vacuum canister. I needed to remove the assemblies because I am replacing the bumper covers and having it painted. I want the assemblies out to support having them painted separately but given I can't get them back in through the openings, I will put them back in through the front after I rebuild them. Then, they will be in the open position when painted.

1. Remove the bumper covers. I removed the side brackets, so I did not have to drill any holes in the fiberglass through the side markers. There are a few YouTube Videos for this.

2. Remove the plastic grills and the blinkers.

3. Remove the Reinforcement Assembly (14A, Sheet 4 in my AIM version) and it is 5 bolts from behind. Wiggle it free.

4. Remove the Front Cushion (14A, Sheet 2) Two big bolts at each end that thread into the frame behind the fiberglass. Two screws that go into U nuts that are closer to the center. This is also referred to as the "honeycomb" element and weighs about 15 pounds.

5. Remove the Front Bumper Bar Extension. 5 Bolts, maybe 8 depending on how you count them per the picture above. 14A, Sheet 3.

6. Remove the Front Bumper Bar Assembly. (14A, Sheet 2) and 3 Bolts. Center bolt comes out easy because of access, and you may need a breaker bar. The two side bolts needed a combo of a box wrench and different length ratchets to get them out. This assembly goes about 25 pounds and won't drop on you. When all bolts are out you have to wiggle and pull it forward. I only had one spacer on the assembly.

7. The headlight assembly is held in place with 5 bolts with 2 into the front panel/upper fender and three in the back that go into the header. To get the back ones out I removed my hood stay bracket to get the hood to open more and it gave me room to get the ratchet on to the bolts. I removed the actuator and in hindsight did not need to do this. The front 2 bolts I used a box wrench.
