Sounds like you certainly have the power to turn the compressor. But you will still feel that old style compressor kick in. And of course when it takes power to turn something, your gas gauge will notice too.
You say you have a modified L48. But didn't mention what transmission. If by chance you have a automatic and also a carburetor on your engine. Make certain that kick up solenoid is working. She'll pull right down if that compressor kicks when idling.

yes it’s carb and i have the stock th350c right now. i’ve been slowly piecing everything together to do a 4l60e swap. almost there maybe a mid season swap?….

as far as the fast idle I’ve found a couple of good post on idle solenoid and after market ones which i'll have to do running a holley. adding in a relay on it i’ve read helps with consistent hold.

an thanks to all that have responded. great info!…

it starts!.. finding buba’s work. somewhere in its life some was so kind to use some type of black body filler an resin to seal up the cowl and looks like gray duct sealer on the box. quite the mess. i’ve chipping up the resin an taking the plenum door out which was sealed shut🤦‍♂️ .

lots of cleaning to do but making progress down in the plenum.

i got the a/c box all cleaned up and decided to test fit the evaporator i got from rock auto.

doesn’t fit properly. it seems someone changed the distance between the inlet and outlet pipe through the years. my stock evap measures 12-1/8” center to center as well as the A/c box opening. the one i got measured 11-7/8” center to center which causes it to jam into the side of the box and you can’t get the seals on or to work properly.

i called old air and there’s measurements are the same as rock autos. i called ac auto solutions and they told me they discontinued there’s due to fitment issues like what i’m having. so who else has had this issue?

here’s an update:

after trying a couple different vendors on the evaporator i went with old air an there’s fits the best so happy to report that.

had to do some fiberglass work on the a/c box, metal divider was rotted so found one online cleaned and painted everything.

now the box is back together all new seals and gaskets and i got the heater box out pretty much about to do the same. fyi the seal kit comes with 1/4” window ribbon which works for most of the box except for the front where the evap tubes come out. the length of that seam needs 3/8” window ribbon for a tight seal. highly recommend using it there.

a/c condenser is in and all brackets are painted an ready to go.
