Default Shifter Console Question

I have a question regarding securing the shifter console. I replaced the old broken console with a reproduction from Al Knoch. I wish I had just repaired the old one but too late now. Anyway, I attached the old metal bracket to the new console and attached the console to the 2 screws on the underside of the center dash. I’m concerned I’ve missed something because when I shift gears (4 speed), it causes the center dash to move with every shift. Is the metal bracket supposed to attach to the transmission tunnel somehow? Or did I miss something else? I also installed a new shift boot but I can’t imagine this would cause the amount of movement I’m experiencing.

This graphic is from a 73 but illustrates the lateral bracket that is attached to the top of the tunnel to which your console reinforcement bracket attaches to.

Stupid question. Does the screw that secures the small trim piece also the same screw that secures the console to the tunnel? Or is one screw used to secure the console to the tunnel and then a separate screw used to attach the plastic trim piece?

I think you will have a lot better view of each part by looking in some of the Corvette Vendor Catalogs. The AIM is ok, but not the detail you really need. Most of the vendors have excellent detailed illustration of each assembly along with part names and of course their price.

The only stupid question is the one that doesn’t get asked. Same screws.

Here is a couple of pages from my 69 AIM

There are two holes on each side. The lower holes fasten the console to the metal bracket, and the upper hole is where the side panels fasten.

When you say the console mounts to the metal bracket, does this mean the console is attached to the transmission tunnel?

Kinda, sorta, in a roundabout way. The metal U-shaped bracket is riveted to the top of the shift console right near where the upper gauge panel studs fasten to it. Then the U-bracket is attached to the transmission tunnel with a screw on each side, through the shift console side panel, mating with two vertical tabs that are bonded to the tunnel.

Bob is correct - two screws. Apologies.

I just took this pic of my 69. The bracket is riveted to the tunnel. The console attaches to the bracket. The smaller bracket is the radio support.

OK. When I installed my reproduction shift console, I wasn’t sure how to attach the console to the tunnel. This is very useful information. Thanks very much for the info and the picture!

Thanks everyone for taking the time to help me out!

There are two metal brackets on the tunnel that the console gets attached to. The rear mounting also holds the front of the parking brake console in place. This way the front and rear of the console are held in place.

I didn’t realize both consoles had mounting tabs. Looks like I’ve got some more work to do, lol. Thanks for the information and picture.
