I think most adapt Cobra replica caps. I'm sure there would be some welding involved, but nothing too complicated.

Yes !!!!
Simply remove the originale gas cap assembly and place the Mooneyes LeMans cap in place. With a sharpie mark for holes to be drilled.
So, ya wanna make it "truely" functional. Order (from a Corvette vendor, Long Island Corvettes is a good source for mid-year parts) a filler neck & gasket for a gas tank for a '63-'67 coupe.
I dropped my gas tank to put the neck on. With the LeMans cap already mounted the neck lines up to the cap. No you do not have to drop the tank but you will most likely have to loosen it up because the long filler neck might not exactly line up exactly cap so you might have move the gas tank slightly one way or the other.

If it is a dangerous part, why did all the road racers, during the time that these cars were raced, use them? You seem to have a point. They do seem vulnerable, sticking out like that. Does anyone know why they were used for road race vettes?

key word....."did"!! Those were used before the "quick fill" valve because popular because thats all there was to dump fuel fast. It is no longer the case.
