WTB: Vented Gas Cap for '70
#2
Drifting
The gasoline tank for 1970 was designed for and required a sealed fuel cap with only the word SEALED stamped on it and an SMC stamp on the underside. This is stated in the 1970-1972 NCRS Judging Manual if you are going for correctness.
Through 1969 they were vented with a small hole in the underside.
Thanks,
Scott

Thanks for your help, your post has prompted another question...
Will a 'Sealed' cap fit on any tank? My original tank has a vented cap on it(cap is not correct), I've tried a non-vented cap and it won't go on completely...
NCRS judging manual had the '70 fuel tank straps the wrong color...So, I begin to wonder what else could be a mistake...
Chris....Thanks for your help. I think I saw it there too.

All of the fuel caps from 1969-1972 should fit. There should be three notches on the filler neck and there are three tangs on the fuel caps that should align. Look carefully at the cap to see if one or more of the tangs are bent too much. The 1969-1971 fuel caps had scalloped edges while the 1972 was smooth but that wouldn't affect the fit.
The 1970-1972 JG is a continually changing manual to reflect the things that were overlooked or in error and it is getting better each edition. I refer to it daily. If you have information that you believe that conflicts with the JG place a post on the NCRS Technical Discussion Board. I read that quite often a day.

If you want a TRUE original 1970 cap that says SEALED and nothing else...I have one for you. 100 bucks shipped. Comes with gasket.Grab it while you can.
The ones that say 'OPEN SLOWLY' in addition to SEALED are not true 1970 caps. Mine is.
PM me as I am not always on the forum.
P.S..Scott..good to catch up the other day!..thanks for the call.
Thx
Jim

Todd, the one you show is a 1972 cap. The one Jim shows is dead-on correct for 1970 and 1970 only. It has SEALED stamped on it and the SMC stamp on the underside. 1971 had the word SEALED on it with a red metal sticker on the lower side that said 'CAUTION OPEN SLOWLY' printed on it. They all used cork gaskets.
Thanks for the photos. This is visual stuff people like to see.

Correction.... Found the NCRS thread. Seems the general concensus is as ss396t6 states.

Thanks, Dennis. I don't know this to be certain but while bead blasting a 1971 cap the red metal label fell off. They used adhesive so I guess eventually they will fall off. Anyway what I ended up with is a cap that has only the word SEALED on it. I thought , "Great. Now I have two SEALED caps." But looking at them closer I discovered that the word SEALED on the 1970 cap was centered over the handle while the one with the red label that had fallen off the word SEALED was off-centered slightly to the right by one letter. May be a factory fluke. May be nothing.

Couple of more random. These are off as well. Unless your 2 are letter centered, (or un-centered maybe), exacly as these, I'd say as long as the stamping was "close to center" was good enough for the factory.
