Did they use close chamber heads in 69? I thought they switched to open chamber heads. I wonder if there were any 69 dated 842 heads.

I am curious about this. How long were 842 heads used in production? I think I saw service replacement one's. Also, I think the later service replacement ones didn't have the plugs in the front and back of the cylinder head.

Curious, Terr

Looking for basically the L89 set up. I believe they were a closed chamber set up.

My research says some of the OEM 69s had closed chamber alum 842s (square exhaust port) and some had open chamber alum 074s (round exhaust). That's the year the 074s were introduced. I have seen 69 dates on 074s. Not sure about the other way around. 70's & 71's used the 074s but not many OEM. Both numbers were produced up thru the 80s and avail over the counter. I have seen late 70s casting dates on those. There was also a 70's d-port 077, which was also avail as a W port, same #, and then in the 80s? the first Bowtie head came out, 861. All the earlier #s are "snowflake" heads, but not the Bowtie.
I looked long and hard and wound up with a nice set of unmolested 074s dated 1978.

Keep looking, They are out there!
Good Luck!

BTW Unlike the iron heads, on the alum ones the date codes are on the bottom, and cannot be seen while installed.

They certainly are. This NOS set was tucked away in my parent's bedroom until I used them on my engine rebuild.

I believe the open chamber heads came on cars around July 69.
