Just got my M20 and was looking over the enternals to find out what I have to work with. Everything looks good. No broken teeth or other obvious failures. the syncros look a little worn but again none were broken. I plan on doing a rebuild kit on the trannie.
My question is how much play is any should be in the input shaft?
Mine felt loose. ie slop from side to side. I had mine rebuilt by Van Steel and when I got it back I did the same test. Now its nice and tight. You can get kits to do the work yourself but I didn't want to go in there. If it feels loos ie sloppy it proably has worn bushings/bearings.
The muncie is still what I would consider noisey ie gear noise but they all are.
Before you spend money on that box make sure you don't plan to put in a 5/6 speed in the near future. I would have put in a tremec if I had of thought about it. Now I have rebuilt mine I am not going to spend the extra money again.
Thanks for the info stingry. I considered the 5\6 speed but I just cannot justify the cost for a weekend car that may get 2-3k miles a year put on it if that. I picked up the muncie for less than 4hundred an figured I would learn how to rebuild it. Iknow the OD's are nice but I would rather spend the money somewhere else.
You'll have some play in the input shaft. It is not part of the main shaft. They are not too hard to rebuild and the kits that Paul C sell are very good. I did the same thing you are planning, rebuilt my Muncie and ST-10 rather then drop $3,500 into a 5 speed kit for a weekend car.

Thanks Gary. I actually realized how stupid my question was when I went out to that site and sent Paul an email asking which kit I needed. After seeing his last name it clicked as far as why you abbreviated it.
