Default OT: Master Cylinder?

Ok. I mark this as ot kuz its for a Chrysler, New Yorker 1989, laundau, no ABS. Three days ago i noticed the brake pedal being slightly spongy. As in i had to press the pedal further down for normal brake action. Yesterday i drove it and it was a little worse. Today i drove it and its almost to the floor. I tried to bleed the brakes. With no success, specially with the front right. I have a mityvac, speed bleeders, and tried for several hours with no results. The paint on the brake booster is flaking as if brake fluid has hit it, however I can't really tell many other signs of leakage. About 2 weeks ago the resioivar was low so i filled it up. The rear wheel cylinders both look good, the front pads are new, the rear shoes look great. The front calipers are not leaking at all. Proportioning valve looks good, no leaks. So you guys think its the master cylinder?

Thanks, Mike

Oh, also i did a little test. The only brake that is working is the front left. I have no idea how the proportioning works in this thing. The front left i can lock up on pavement. The front right can't hold back the tranny creep. I have no real way to test the rear's. The ebrake works fine, when i stomp on the brakes the car doesn't dart left so maybee the right rear is working to counter my front left.

Bump. Without the chrysler my poor c3 will have to sit all by himself in a university parking lot where who knows how many people can open their door into him.

The rear main seal is leaking. I've seen it dozens of times. Best just to replace the whole thing than getting it rebuilt.

Could be just the seal or it could be the housing.

BTW- The MC is a diagonal on your car, I'm pretty sure, so one circuit feeds one front and the opposite rear. There are obviously 2 circuits (chambers).

YOU NEED TO WORRY ABOUT THE BOOSTER ALSO. If brake fluid has entered the booster it will deteriorate the inner seals!

Check your booster's internals through the hole in front. Use a rolled up paper towel to poke around to see if any fluids collected at the bottom.

This is very important!

oh, good call on checking the booster, I wouldn't have thought of that. The booster is functioning great, holding vacuum after engine shutoff just like it should, but with the way the paint is flaking there's no doubt there is fluid in it.

I ended up driving the vette to school, but i found a spot where i could park paralell. Let's just hope it doesn't rain today (no wipers).

If you have fluid at the bottom the booster I STRONGLY recommend getting a new booster. It may take a month, but eventually you will lose the diaphram seal.

PIA, I know!

maybee i should make another bubba smily, holding a mityvac in 1 hand, and a brake brake booster in the other.

I bit the bullet and i must say that it takes about 4 hours on your back to change the booster on the vette. They chrysler took me 15 minutes. Putting the master cylinder in took 10. Bleeding the master took 5, and bleeding the brakes took 10 (speed bleeders). I must say that out of the cars in our family fleet, the brake feel on the chrysler is now second only to the corvette.
