Ok, heres the deal. My 69 427 Tri-Power project is almost complete and I will be painting it at some point down the road. Now has a 20 foot 69 Monza Red Paint job (My guess is Bubba or Macco).
Orignal color was Blue from what I can tell, trim tag is funky and does not match any 69 numbers that I can find (and I have every book on the subject of corvette numbers). Here is what it says:
Chevrolet LLL
Trim 400 Paint 988
The LLL part is what I can't break the code on (any ideas??) for build date and there was not a 988 paint code in 1969. I think someone swapped the trim tag somewhere along the way (who know / who cares).
Anyway, the point of all this is that I really like "Steel Cities Gray", how do you think that would look on a 1969. This is a Non Numbers Matching car that is correct in appearance. Call it a 1969 427 (L89) Tri-Power Clone. Thanks for any input.
There was a 988 code for 1969, Burgundy. Also, check that "LLL" code again to see if it may be "L 11" which would indicate that the car was built on the 11th day of month "L" which is July. What are the last 5 digits of the VIN? That will help determine if the L 11 date matches the build sequence of the car. Not sure about the 400 interior code, that doesn't look right. Could it be 408?
Last 6 numbers of Vin are 719738 which points to March 1969 build date. In 1969 the Trim code was STD or 402. The first year that used both 400 and 988 codes was 1971. The 988 was "Steel Cities Gray" now that is Twilight Zone stuff. Someone swapped out the trim tag with one that has the color I like. WOW!!!
