Default What carb, intake?

Hey fellas,
So my motor is out and will be getting machined soon. I know I'm gonna go with a Comp XE268 or XE 274 camshaft, and for heads I'm going with the SD modified Vortec's. So my questions are:

1. Would my Edelbrock performer intake work well with this setup? I was thinking of going for an Edelbrock RPM-Air gap.

2. What carb should I be looking for that is relatively easy to work with since I'm still somewhat of a novice. And how many CFM do I need?

Thanks,
~ Colin

hood clearance first , do you have enough room for a Air-Gap

Hmmm...didn't think of that. I have a '74 with a stock hood, so I'm not sure. The car as of yet does not have an air filter. Would it fit with a low rise air filter?

Hey Thrasher - I just finished this up -- today (sd vortecs)

As I was told by others and found out myself, the only edelbrock that fits is the vortec performer ... nothing else. I had to use a dremel and cut down and already low profile air filter and keep the stud very short. I have maybe 1/8 inch clearance.

I have a holley 650dp and demon 625. I put the holley and and its awesome. Will test the demon soon. You couldchoose from 600-750cfm but do a search on the forum for more info on this esp from "Lars".

My cam is aftermarket but I don't know the specs. Maybe you'll want to look at the new lunati voodoo cams they claim to be 10-15hp/tq better than the xe line- that's my next upgrade maybe the 262/268.

Let me know if you need more info on the vortec

i'm running with xe268, performer intake, speed demon 650,and 186 "fuelie heads".... it seems to work pretty well together but i am still in the "shake down" phase...some times the carbs with the most straight forward adjustments may be easier for a novice to adjust even if it means a couple more adjustments....on the speed demon there are 3 critical settings, transition slots, idle mixture and float level....and they are all adjustable and straight forward....lots of info out there on them Lars has a great paper on adjusting them....and you will have the opportunity to learn and grow into it...just a thought...that is nice set up you're cooking up make sure you get a good carb to go with it...

Nate- If I'm thinking correctly the SD vortecs require a reusable gasket. Did you get that gasket and the bolts that go with it?

Bob- I'm hoping to make some decent power with this setup. Have you been on the dyno yet with your new motor?

not sure what sd modified means but, you cant put old style perfomer on the vortecs. not the valve covers either. exhaust will work though. you gotta have vortec style manifold and v covers. the carb choice will depend on what you do to the engine. with vortecs i wouldnt go over 750 cfm. there are MUCH better flowing aftermarket heads out there. but you wont beat them for the price!

74Thrasher - I got the intake/heads (z28 springs) package that includes all gaskets and bolts. I also got the scorpion aluminum self aligning roller rockers. For valve covers I got the trickflow adapter from summit racing for $100 so I could use my aluminum valve covers since they are nice.

My compression is about 10 - from L82 and I used the .028 gm head gasket. The intake gasket is reusable since its plastic/composite.

I just tested mine out tonight and burned the tires all the way through a 2nd gear shift - th350.
