Default Chrome Distributor Cover/Shield

My car has a chrome distributor cover/shield. According to what I know about the history of the car it may have been put on in the early 90s. It is now showing its age.

It is visible in my engine pic just below sig.

I have checked a few catalogs and cannot find it, but am almost certain I have seen them for sale somewhere.

Any ideas?

That definitely looks like the stock piece as on my car. Did you call Zip? They can sometimes find you stuff like this...

Dr. Rebuild will most likely have it.
Check his website/catalog.

its a stock igintion shielding ,if your talking about the chrome cover that is covering the distributer and then goes down hiding the spark plug wires, corvettes have those. from what i have heard, before they were in use,a spark jumped and caught fire (to the carb) causing a bad fire and a drivers death,so the shielding was added to ''ground out''the jumping spark. we all have them(maby some earlier cars dont,as im not sure what year that they came about) im sure there out there if not in catalogs there at swap meets or vette salvage dealers

I've seen the chrome distributor shields in the Mid America catalog. Cost ~$100.

I found it, but it is for a 75-77. I wonder if a previous owner made it fit?

Did you find it online or in the hardcopy catalog? I'm at work right now (don't tell my boss what I'm doing) and I don't have the catalog on hand, but I could have sworn that it was for earlier C3's also. I was looking at buying the same shield too. I'll check at home tonight.

Regards....

Early C3s have them too - from the factory.
They are different from the 75 style, but not much.

My understanding is to shield RF interference from the plug wires.
With newer resistor core wires, they are not needed, but they look nice.
Beware that they can come too close to the cap/wires and
potentially short out one of the cylinders.

My car is a 72, so the Ecklers part is not for me. The one on my car looks like Item C on p.V22 in the MA Catalog, but it is for a 75-77. I might order it anyway.

Ohsixx, it looks like the stock tophat for the distributor shielding. The distributor shielding was used to prevent static to radios since the hood was fiberglass and not metal. Under the tophat there should be a plastic film riveted in. This insulates the tophat from the ignition system. It looks like your's has only the top and not the side pieces since your spark plug wires run over the valve covers. The complete set has side channels to route the spark plug wires down under the exhaust. Take a look at my sig and you'll see how the stock 74 looks. I'm pretty sure most of the major vendors have them either in complete sets or by the piece.

Yep, I agree. I'm home now and checked the MA catalog. They don't show any shields available for the years 1971-74. Weird.
