Default Mechanical Fuel Pump Replacement 70 BB

Removed mechanical fuel pump from my 1970 big block yesterday, easily done, there was a little pressure on the pump arm when removed. Then I went to install the new pump, "NOT". It won't go back in. When I removed the pump I could see the rod in the bottom of the engine casting, there is a pipe plug holding the rod in pllace, I did not remove the plug or the rod, what is the secret to install the new pump? I went to the shop manual (3 different one's) and they don't really tell you anything. Looking for the secret of installing the new pump. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks

The secret is heavy grease. The push rod that you are seeing actuates the pump lever and needs to be held up inside the block. Some heavy wheel bearing grease applied to the push rod will usually allow it to "stick" up in the block long enough to reinstall the pump. Simply coat the push rod and slide it back up in the block with a screwdriver.

You may still have some resistance depending on where the push rod cam lobe is when the engine stopped. You can either push on the fuel pump hard enough to compress the actuator and diaphragm spring while starting the fuel pump bolts, or you can tap the engine over with the starter to rotate the cam.

Do the Big Blocks have that little bolt on the front side of the engine just below the head like the small blocks? If so just take it out and replace it with a longer one that will hold the actuating rod in the up position--a very simple solution. When the fuel pump is in place just replace the bolt with the little old one--the rod will drop down to come in contact with the fuel pump rod. Maybe a Big Block owner will chime in.

Turn the engine over with a ratchet . Maybe the pumprod( ) is riding against the tip of the lobe.

Default B B Fuel Pump Install

Right you are, turned the engine over until the rod was off the cam lobe and about 1/4 inch away from the engine casting(inside the hole) , it was a simple install after that. I placed the pump into the engine and tightened the bolts with my finger (piece a cake). Then I tightened the bolts with a wrench. Thanks for your response.
