I have been watching auctions for these several months now and they have been getting as high as $800 I watched this auction for about 7 days and got some input on it from fellow forum member Jim Shea. After talking to Jim and the sellar I decided to take a chance on it if the price was right. It should be here on Friday so I will know a little more about the overall condition then.
I will be asking Jim a lot of questions on this and as he suggested I will post them in the forum along with progress pics so everyone can benifit.
With my 6'6" 240lbs frame the standard column was killing me to get in and out of the car. I plan on going with a 14" steering wheel as well.
That's a good price, but you still need some pieces to make it work. Locking ring, horn button, top cover etc.. They are available on Ebay, keep watching...I did the same thing..I think you're off to a good start..
Hello Wade, good deal on that column, I sent the one out of my 71 here: http://www.corvettesteering.com/comp...ation_page.htm
They are in Anderson SC. and seem like good people to deal with also. Mine needed the bearings replaced and they even installed a new ignition switch. make sure your seller protects the splined end of the column for shipping, they taped a piece of wool to mine so it can't get jammed, that end can't take much of a bump. If I were you I would call and get a price to check it out before installing. Just a thought.
I have an extra black horn button if needed, maybe some other pieces also.
Do you remember what it cost you to have it rebuilt?
Thanks
Wade
Wade, I know you were talking to the other Steve, but check this guy out too. He did mine and it turned out excellent.. STEERINGCOLUMNOLOGIST@MSN.COM Randy..
I don't remember but the bill is probably still in the box, (very good shipping) i'll check tonight. Had mine done ~7 years ago and still haven't installed it though, i'm sure prices have increased. He's a nice guy though he advised me what should be done..

Steve too
Thanks Steve too I will definately check him out as well.
I used a column out of a 81 eldorado and swapped the parts from
my cracked 78 onto it and with very little modding to the mounts it went right in. There actually pretty easy to rebuild.
about the only tricky part was removeing the Tilt pivot pins without
the special tool.
Thanks guys. I am hoping that it will be a situation where I can just replace the missing parts, repaint it and put a new steering wheel on and away I go. I will know more tomorrow afternoon when it is delivered.

Does the AIM have a breakdown of how this thing is put together? Since our house is still being built and we are living with my parents all of my manuals are in storage. It is supposed to be nice this weekend so I can finally escape my kids and work on the car for a while.
I bought and sold a couple of T/T columns in an effort to get one to work from all of the pieces. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I sold two that looked to be in the same condition for much less (about $100 each). I paid $200 for one and $100 for the other, so in the end it cost me $100 to get a fully functional column
They are a pain to put together though. I know Jim Shea is very good at it and it's probably no big deal to take them apart and put them back together, but I wouldn't want to do it again!
This AIM sheet has a couple parts that are either missing or are not shown correctly
Several things that are not shown on this drawing are the small Spring, Eyelet, and the Insulator that extends up through the hub and makes contact with the Upper Contact Assembly. Also, the Lower Contact Assembly #12 does not show the large spring that is attached to it.
So download this AIM sheet for the 1977 through 1982 C3s as well. It shows the missing parts in better detail.
I used to watch columns on ebay religiously. One day I saw a column listed as coming from a "70's" Corvette That had been listed for about 2 hours with a buy it now of $99.00 I could tell from the picture it was 69-73 so I bought it it had a steering wheel off 77 or so Corvette that came with it also. Turns out it was a complete 70 TT column, I used the steering wheel on my Chevelle with teh hub off my old straight column and have a perfect column for $99.00 Sorry to hijack your thread I just was really happy like you are about a Column LOL I feel like a kid again when stuff like this hapens. Good luck with your column, you will love it!
