Default "The Phoenix Project" lives!!

I'm calling my 78 the "Phoenix", as it has more or less risen from the ashes of it's former self...so to speak. She's been dormant for several years, but I have been able to get her running last week, and have since added a complete 2 1/2 inch exhaust system with Flowmasters. It's alive!!!!!

We went for a quick trip down the road yesterday, and what I've noticed is that the steering is VERY quick. Is that common? I'm not sure what steering ratio it has (there's only one, right?). It just has the feeling that it could get out of hand in a hurry in the unexperienced hands.

It also has this wierd thing...I'll try to explain. When you have your foot on the brake and switch from drive to reverse, it feels like the rear end squats down a bit, then does the opposite when put back in reverse. Is this a trailing arm....u-joint....or some other mount related problem?? I'm a little stumped at the moment. Anyone??

'The Squat' is normal with automatic vettes.

I'm assuming the 'quick steering wheel' behavior is related to bumpy uneven roads; the steering wheel can get away from you if you don't 'hold on'. In my experience with my '80 L48, this may be a result of marginal shocks, badly worn tires or loose front suspension (control arm bushings or ball joints).

What's funny is that it doesn't feel loose at all, and all of the front end stuff looks to be OK. This being said, I'm planning on doing a complete front end rebuild when I get new springs and cut out 1/2 coil. It's just a little nerve racking as the car is turning, and you've only THOUGHT about doing it!! It's got PMS....er,....PDQ....no, wait.......ESP!!

The front wheels are probably toeing out. This makes the car very twitchy in cornering.

Yes, the squat is normal. Feels cool dosen't it, now that you know it's not a problem. When mine does that, I open the door and check the pavement to ensure I'm still above ground.
