Default Side Pipes...gutting & stuffing

Not to complain by any means, but a Very Generous co-worker gave me these Side Pipes for the wonderful price of $0.00! The center section (under the shields) measures 34", with a 3" diameter, but is stuffed with a horrible baffle/muffler that only has an approximate passage of 1-5/8"

How do I get this "choker" out? I see two small tack welds at the "inlet side" that I guess I can grind down, but what about the other side? Any tricks?

Then I need some ideas of what to put back in there (open will just be TOO loud for me, but would LOVE to have a nice deep throaty "gurgle"). I see others have used the SPS/JCL spiral's, but looks like these are for the 3-1/2" and 4" versions...anything flow decently and have a "gurgle" for the 3"?

Thanks so much...I can't wait to have these on (but not pissing-off the neighbors too much!)

Speedway motors sells "auger mufflers" that are 11" long and 3 or 3.5" in diameter. They are made more cheaply than Spiral turbo baffles but they are only $15 each

I used 3 per side, welded together, they sound great. esp at $90 for both sides! And I am running a healthy 427...

Summit racing or jegs used to sell them too. call tho. they are not in the catalog or online...

Under $100 vs. $300+...gotta LOVE that! Will definitely look into these "augers"

* Still lookin' for "gutting" tips...if there's something easier than whacking a fence post w/ a 3lb. hammer inside the pipe, PLEASE share

Thanks!

Here is a Patriot Exhaust online catalog I found via Google:
http://www.classicboatconnection.com...ot_catalog.pdf

From this, you can put the part number into Summit's page and get prices. The 3/12" dia 11" long auger insert is $9.69 ea from Summit.

They also sell chrome plated heat shields for $30 - $40 each, depending on length.
