I've never really loved the carpet side of the console on my '80. Right now, the piece is painted a satin black. I may go with the same as the console. To me, it looks a little better than the pic makes it look.
Haven't decided yet, but I suppose if I really don't like it, I can always go back with the carpet..whatta ya'll think...bubba er OK?
I too disliked the carpet. I took mine to an upholstery shop and had them install padding and matching tan vinyl that closely matches my interior. I think it looks far better than the carpet. I paid $50.00 for both sides.
go to wallymart and the little lady will sell you vinyl that matches your interior. get some 3-m super adhesive and install the vinyl yourself. i made my own panels and covered them this way. looks like the rest of my interior and no shaggy carpet!

The super wal mart where i live doesn't carry the dye your talking about. I have asked them many times to order it with no results. Paying $20 bucks a can from vendors is not an option either. There is no way it should cost so much.
Mine on my car was crumbling , so I traced it and went to Lowes, and got a sheet of some fiber board that was more sturdy than the cardboard stuff, and I did the same thing you guys did with the Vinyl covering, came out great, cheap, and sturdy!

I believe he ment to goto the craft/fabric section and get some vinyl and cover it yourself.
so how did you make those, i think they look very custom and like the way yours look. what material did you use to get them sturdy so they dont bend and crack? and what did you cover them with, vinyl?

The material is .040 thick, prepainted aluminum...It was not the right color, but I wanted a good bond for painting...The color is just GM trim - it's a black satin..
The pic is just a test fit ... I still might look at the vinyl ..

How did you get them to fit right? I installed my center console over the weekend and I purchased the new side panels because I didn't have the originals. Talk about a crappy fit. I had to trim the back edge off, but I already had the carpet on. The ol' DeWalt miter saw made quick work of that problem. The panels still don't fit very good where the armrest transitions into the shift plate, but the black carpet hides it well enough.
Wow! That looks WAY better than the capet IMHO. I'd have to see the vinyl before I decided which way to go.
The only reservation would have is this: Black interior items in FL get hot enough to burn your hands in summer. While their location is low, I have glass tops and the sun still gets in. Guess I need to break down and get the windows tinted.
I'm too busy spending the money on performance mods. You ought to see my radio that has been in the car from a previous owner. A Realistic cassette head unit that sounds EXACLTY like the old AM tranisiter radios I had as a kid. Needless to say, I never turn it on.
