I have seen bits of info on electric cutouts. what are the options/costs involved in a setup that allows you to not use sidepipes all the time?

Depends on how fast your leg tells your brain that it is being burned!!!
For real, Ive done it where I felt it instantly and pulled away fast enough where it was only a minor scald....and Ive also done it the other much worse way, as explained above!

My factory side exhaust "covers" don't get too hot. The pipes underneath do.

Three Mile Island Hot, As a 14 year old, I still remember getting out of my uncle's '65 factory side exhaust, with shorts on. Very short learning curve. Great memory though!

Bad news hot. I rented a Superformance Cobra in Vegas and warned the valet to watch the sidepipes...came back out to get the car and he showed my wife and I the place on his leg where he used to have skin.

But they do sound damn good

i used to wrap my leftovers in foil the night before work, then at lunch time the next day ,,start mt old truck w. sidepipes and place the tinfoil package on the pipe next to the side where the pipes came out. it would get my leftover chicken hot in less than 5 minnutes,,

My wife got a bad second-degree burn climbing out while my daughter was telling her to watch out for the sidepipes.

The Jet-Hot does cool off fairly quickly but I still added some shields.

You know the exhaust gas temps are around 1200-1500 F some odd degrees, and by the time it gets to the collector, you need to have an O2 sensor heater built into the sensor, or you may well go open loop around town, that's around 600f or so....
well after a fair blast on a warmed up car, say 1/4 mile in traffic, not a drag strip, you have heated the exhaust up really well, to well over 600f, so you can guess from that what happens just a bit further down the pipe.....it's hot enough to burn most anything on.....case closed....

having said that.....I want a set of side pipes, guess I will have t make my own as aftermarket is silly expensive, and I will need to make myself a set of shields...no question about that....

Back in the 80's when my Dads Vette had Hooker sidepipes I never got a burn. Probably because I am real careful and have long legs. I did see what can happen to your legs when one of my friends who was not as careful, did get a nasty burn. It happens very quickly and leaves a nasty painful burn mark. Lasts a real long time too.

REALY HOT!

-Mark.

My father-in-law burned is whole hand on mine. He opened the door and planted his hand right on the unshielded pipe to help lever himself out of the car... I don't think he'll ever ride in it again. Maybe once I get my custom shields in place...
