You beat me to the question. I'm removing it from my 1980 also. I want to know too. Also, is this going to be another cussing, pain in the neck project? Not that it would stop me from doing it...Just curious.

Thanks

You will want to remove the spedo/tach cluster before pulling the dash out. In order to remove the cluster from the dash you will need to drop the column a little...an inch or so. Just loosen the front two bolts under the dash cover and it will drop just enough to create enough room to wiggle out the cluster. The 80 style dash is not fun, take your seats out first, glove box, center console, center cluster, ducting to the side vents. I find that removing is easier than installation. Just take your time and go slow and carefull.

It is not fun at all, expecially the installation if you want todo a good job and not scratch things up or create rattles. However if you are removing the dash to restore and paint it...the finished product is well worth the pain...IMO

It is the taking my time and doing it slowly that I have the problems with. You saying that taking it out is alot easier that putting it back in , that does not do anything for my confidence either. Brent

Maybe a little easier to take the speedo/tach out without loosening the column, but not necessary. FWIW, you don't really need to take the seats out either.

Taking the cluster out allows you to unplug the wiper and headlight switches. I guess you could unplug them when the dash is pulled partway out, but I find it easy and fast to just pull the cluster...a 10min job. The seats must come out to remove the carpeted panels at the side of the console so that you can get at the two screws that go up through the center console into center cluster bezel....otherwise the tabs will break off(ask me how I know). Also with the seats out it is much easier lie on your back to work under the dash. I think the dash is one of those jobs that goes fine if you take your time. However if you are in a rush it could be a very frustrating experience especially if you end up with electrical issues or rattles...and have todo it again.. Personally this is the one job that I hate, but...the end result is great if you take your time. I had one of the ugliest dashes around...see before and after pictures

Its very easy to drop the steering wheel, after removing the 4 screws that hold the cover on, there are 2 bolts that hold it up. It will drop down about 4" without any problem.
It's allot easier to put back together with the new parts with it out of the way.
I just finished mine last fall.

Not really trying to disagree with you, just offering another perspective..there's more than one way to skin a cat...

I've had my cluster out several times without lowering the steering column and without partly removing the dash.. take the section out that houses the headlight vacum bypass, reach behind and remove the speedo cable, take all the bezel screws loose, tilt it top first, wiggle it a little, slide it out a little and you can access the plug..

...done this as well several times without removing the seats...push down on the cushion to access teh middle screw and put the seat all the way forward to get the rear most screw..

Maybe I've just been lucky, but I don't have a bunch of squeaks - have had the dash out though and didn't think it was that bad...
