Who has shipped a painted C3 hood - without damage? I tried to calculate cost on UPS site but it says the package exceeds total girth-165 inches. If anyone has done this can you tell me the weight and how you packed it so no damage occurred-or is this even a reasonable quest? If repainting is likely I'd just forget the idea. Any suggestions/experiences are appreciated.
I bought some rear quarters on ebay and th seller sent them on a greyhound bus!!!! You might want to look into that. UPS will not ship items tht large. Just out of curiosity what year hood are you shipping? Here is greyhounde shipping site http://www.shipgreyhound.com/
When I bought mine It came Truck freight from Eklers in a cardboard box with trashbags filled with spray foam (expanding foam) that were molded around the sides to suspend it in the middle of the box.
DON"T use FedEx. I sent a '67 BB hood to another member here about 2 years ago. Packaged well, too. When it arrived he said it looked like they had run over it with one of their trucks!
You have to make your own box, Get the cardboard from the local washer dryer and apliance center, they have lots and will gladly give you some. You cut the cardboard with a carpenters knife and to make a corner just cut the top sheet of paper and fold. Use foam blocks to position the hood in the cardboard at the righ thight, then use a can or two of foam insulation baught at any hardware store to super protect the corners and the "V" at the nose. Voula' your a super packer. Oh and use grayhound or freight collect.

Ditto for mine (L-88 hood from Eklers)....around $100.00 for shipping costs.
Had mine sent with Greyhound also. It went Arlington Texas to Minneapolis Minnesota for about $50 and left I think on a Friday, picked up on Tuesday. Brian wrapped cardboard on each side and it arrived with no damage.
I may be selling my BB hood to another member. I'll be useing Overnight Shipping. Fortunatly I saved my box the new L-88 hood i bought came in. Cost for delivery of my new hood was around $200.00.
Don't ship it ups, they will ship the hood but at a oversize rate.
I shipped mine and they broke it in several places ( I think they used it for a ramp ) It was padded and boxed well. I insured it for full replacement value (they will let you buy all the insurance you want but it will be up to you to prove the value for a claim) and they fought paying the claim, they even sent a manager to look at the shipping box. It took about two months to get reimbursed
If I were to do that again I would make them box it up, sign a statement of doing so, and I would take pictures as proof.
A friend of mine used to work for UPS. He told me if you want your package to arrive destroyed. Mark it Fragile, Handle with Care, etc. and it will look like it went through a war.
