Default Routing Plug Wires Under Headers

Kinda stumped! I have been looking at the looms in Jegs and Summit. Jegs seems to have the best selection of looms, but from looking at their pics it is hard for me to visualize exactly how to get this done.

Can someone tell me the best looms to buy. A PN from Jegs are any place else would be very helpful.

I dont know if it`s a BB or SB, but 90 degree plug boots are the safest bet for both with a make up set and running down the back of the engine along the bell housing and behind the headers to the plugs. Safely out of sight with a clean appearing engine and normally with a lot of clearance around the header tubes.

Are there any heat related issues?

No more than the original will have. The clearances should be adequate with the 90 degree boots and a good set of headers as most of todays wire sets are heat resistant anyway. Just dont buy a cheap autozone lifetime warrantee set.

I routed my wires under the headers when I first installed my engine. It looks nice and clean, but it was too difficult to keep them away from the headers. Most were fine but there were a few tubes that were just too close to the block. I ended up going over the valve covers. That way I can be sure not to burn a wire.

Check out your clearance before buying anything. If you do decide to go under the headers, I believe Jegs has heat wraps for ignition wires available.

Most looms are intended to be used when wiring over the valve covers not under the eng.

Exactly correct, thats why I prefer the other route. Cleaner looking engine and easy access to the overhead covers. As pictured.

Smoked tires, Sure looks a hell of a lot better that way. About my hood, some SOB {probably a bubba} changed the hood hinges on that baby Vette. You know how that goes. No brains for originality .

I also prefer the wires under, I just used 90* boots and those little plastic wire clips to hold them together, keep 'em tight and there's no burning problem....

My 79 had sheet metal heat shields to protect the wires. You might be able to get some from a Chevy dealer or one of the catalog suppliers. They may have been chrome originally, but they were no longer resembling any form of shiny when I took them off the motor so I can't be sure.

Same with the '81, thought it's routed a little loose after the middle of the engine, forward. The '81's have those standard "shorty" header like things that require routing the wires under the heads. Nice and neat though. One of the forum members had these sheilds for sale recently.

It is almost incomprehensible that anyone here would misrepresent the facts.

Under header seems to work great for me. I use Accel 300+ which are wrapped in heat resistant sheath (Pro Sleeve). See link:

Yep. I guess your right now that you mentioned it. I always though it looked a little different from my other Vettes. But since it`s Red and all Vettes are suppost to be Red, and it certainly sounds like a wild Vette with it`s LS7 454, I just presumed it was one of those one off unusual Motion Vettes you hear about ever so often. I`m going to have a serious talk with the gentleman that sold and apparently misrepresented it to me. You know how E bay can be, they never tell the truth. Thanks for clearing up the identity, now I can rest comfortably.

PS, But how do you like the plug wires, and those are 2 1/4 tubes on the Hooker Super Comps with tons of clearance. Tons of HP too.

Ferndog, nice clean engine bay on your Red

ferndog: I like those wires. Which looms/seperators did you use?
