Default Crank interchange question!

I'm in the process of building a 1972 BBC 402. everything is going fine with the project, that was until I had the crank checked. Turns out I'm in need of a crank. It was a cast crank anyway, so I'd like to pick up a forged crank for the right price.

My question goes something like this! I've found a guy who's selling a forged crank for a 396/427. I happened to ask where's the rest of the motor (he also has a set of rods) is. Then apparently he says it all came out of a 366 (bbc). Can anyone explain this better? I was under the understanding that these cranks were internally balanced but they all had different weights, can they be interchanged!

In the books I've checked, looks like all the 366 Blocks were 4 bolt mains, so might they also have had forged cranks too. As another twist I then found a guy that has a complete running 366 engine running that I can buy for $100 less than the crank the 1st mentioned guy has.

Budget is the key word here, I'm fully aware that I can buy an Eagle piece and I'd love too but I blew the budget for this year on the "NEW" aluminum heads.

Thanks for any advice you can pass along!

I'd try to find a 454 crank, and bump up some displacement while youre having to buy a new crank, but that's me.

The 366 is a tall deck truck block. Stay away from it. No BBC parts would fit this. Get yourself a forged crank preferebly a stroker and have at it.

Learn something new. Never heard of a 366BB.

You don't want a 366 for much of anything. It is a tall-deck block, the heads will interchange, but have tiny ports. THe rods interchange, so I guess that's OK. The cranks interchange, but would have to be re-balanced. (366/396/402/427 cranks=3.76" stroke, 454=4" stroke) From what I see, all 366 cranks were forged.
