I am in the process of selecting new speakers to replace the factory ones in my 70 coupe. I would like to have some feedback from you guys as to which ones are a direct fit and have the best sound. I plan on putting 2 in the dash and also 2 in the kick panels where the 68's and 69's had them.
Seriously, I bought four 4"x6"s from Ecklers and am happy. Can't hear as well at speed or RPM with loud exhaust but folks warned me to expect that. I've come to think that it's the way it was. My '71 coupe isn't an amphitheater and I've other places to appreciate quality tunes.
Do you have the original radio or are you running a newer aftermarket unit? The original radio requires 10 ohm speakers, modern 4 ohm speakers will overload the output circuits and cause severe damage.

Oh sorry I forgot to mention that I am planning to run the SecretAudio SS. Rated at 140 watts (4x35) I know there are mixed reviews on this unit, but I want to keep my factory radio in place and I figure that this is cheaper than having new guts installed in mine.

Do you know what brand those speakers from Eckler's are?
Corvette World sells a couple of different set of speakers--both 4 x 6 direct bolt in's. The watts and one set is a two way I believe--very good sound for the 4 x 6. I have a set in the dash and another set in the kick panels and it is quite adequate for my likes--some like the watts to blow their dates clothes off and rattle their fillings--personal choiece.
Don't buy speakers from Ecklers!!!!! You'll get mediocre quality for top dollar.
4x6 is a standard size speaker you can get ANYWHERE! I would recommend going to Crutchfield.com and putting in your year. For my 80 it only shows the 4x6's in the dash, but that does mean they'll fit. If their web site doesn't help, give them a call. The folks there are nice and usually very helpful.
For the brands there my personal preferences are Infinity or Alpine. This link should show you the 4x6 speakers available.

I installed a new 80w AM/FM Cassette with new dash & kick panel speakers w/removable 6x9's on the rear deck back in 89'. Fade control always favored the rear speakers and the ones in the dash/kick panel are really worthless. In fact, I don't think I EVER remember hearing anything out of the kick panel speakers and the dash speakers are really weak.
I started an interior resto. last month and had forgotten I installed the kick panel speakers! They had rotted out as this is not an optimum location IMHO to mount speakers due to moisture.
I may consider replacing them and would like to know if 68/69's had some sort of insullation behind the speakers in the kick panels? A more powerful amplifier could also assist my cause.

Happy to reak your positive experience w/kick panel speakers. Did you insulate the space for the speakers (4x4) or just fit them in? Thanks!
