Default RANT! So what's going to break next??? Updated with the answer!!

Several months ago I spent weeks detailing the engine compartment and underside and installed a new 383 and sidepipes on my 73 vert.
Weather and lack of spare time have limited the amount of time I have been able to work on tuning it, but recently thanks to help from Lars I am getting it closer to being tuned. It's running really nice!

Except that a week ago, after putting in a higher temp thermostat, I noticed a little green liquid dripping on the passenger carpet and steam coming out of the dash Yup, the damm heater core blew up.
I knew I should have changed that thing out while the engine was out of it!
Oh well, I just disconnected and bypassed it so I would be able to drive it.

So yesterday I it to work, it is running strong with no problems and the sound going through the tunnel on the way is absolutely awesome!!

I expected the drive home to be just as much fun, but the car had other plans right from the start
I go to open the driver's side door and notice the handle is sagging. Sure enough, door won't open because something has come loose inside the door.
No problem, I am able to get in throug the passenger side and I will fix it when I get home.
Then I turned the key to start it.
Nothing.
I guess that old stock starter that I put on my new high compression engine finally just said "NO".
I went back inside the office to get a hammer so I could the starter and take out some frustration, and of course my dad (also my boss) has to come out and investigate. The first thing he says is "hey look, that belt is messed up". Sure enough, the AC belt is flipped upside down and riding on the outer front edge of the pulley.

After a lot of banging the starter finally worked, and I cut the belt off to keep it from destroying anything else when it broke and I was able to get home with no further problems.
I just wonder what is going to break next, I'm tired of working on this thing!!!!!!

OK, I feel a little better now.

A little good news for you. I think that most of the time, if hammering on the starter solves your problem, it's probably the selenoid and not the starter. Much cheeper and easier to replace. You can even rebuild it, though it probably isn't worth the bother.

No such luck with this one. Before I started hitting it I tried shorting across the terminals with a screwdriver and it did nothing at all.

I am pretty sure it has a bad spot on the armiture (sp). It is like a roll of the roulette wheel every time the starter quits rotating whether the brushes are on a good spot or the bad one.

I don't want to spend the money but I think a gear reduction starter is in order, and as long as I am crawling around under the damm thing again I guess I might as well pull the sidepipe/header/AC evaporator box/VIR, and replace that stupid heater core as well.

Kevin: I keep three list for my 1973. # 1 list is "things I think that will break next" . #2 list is "things that have already broken and need repair". The #3 list is " projects I want to do".

It is part of the C3 ownership experience!

When my heater core goes, I intend to bypass as you did until I get a burst of motivation and energy to pull and replace. Luckily you and I live in Texas and that fact---plus C3's are hot enough as is---and we both have convertibles greatly lessen the need to repair the heater core ASAP! Hang in there! Next week it will be me ranting about C3 ownership!

73's are just pissed that they don't belong to the all chrome or all rubber bumber C3 crowds so they take it out on their owners.

Kevin,

Heck at least your driving yours.....mine's still sitting on the jack stand in the same position since I pulled the motor.

I gotta get the new garage going before I return to the car.

Now, those new valve cover gaskets are still holding - Right.....

Tim,
I was wondering if you had finished your car yet, sounds like the answer to that would be in the negative.
I guess that garage project turned out to be more work than you first bargained for.

Valve covers were not leaking as of yesterday when I was beating on the starter, but I didn't look after I got home, so with my luck lately it's anybody's guess at this point.

Let me know if you need any help with the car when you get back to work on it.

You are not alone! My car is trying to set a record for the most fluid leaks. The problem with leaks is: 1)Tranny- might as well rebuild while its out, 2)differential- may as well rebuild while its out and replace susp. bushings and rear spring, 3)power steering leaks when I am not looking (it wont leak after I have degunked everything and under the car searching however, when I move the car the next day there it is on the concrete). This adds up to frustration and more time and money than I have right now. Whew, I feel better now.

next big thing that will happen: You'll hit a curb at about 30mph and screw up the steering system.
