Differential Pinion Shaft
I have removed my rear diff. in my 80 vette and am trying to remove mushroomed axle yokes. I am needing to know if the center pin that the yokes ride against is supposed to be totally smooth. I think it is called the differential pinion shaft. The one in my diff has what looks like 3 grooves cut into it. Is this the way it should look or have my yokes made those grooves ? Thanx Brent

The stock one has 2 grooves for the retainer clips and 2 wider grooves in the center that are perfect for chewing up the stub axles, the replacement one is smooth apart from having just 2 grooves for the clips:
