Just removed the yokes, and half shafts from my 1980. There was 2 types of u-joint fasteners used. One being the strap style and another being the bolts style. It seems that the bolts style were used consistently on the u-joints at the wheels . However at the axle yokes I have a mixture of both styles. What is this car supposed to have , and if it were a choice between the two types ,which is better ? Thanx Brent

My 1980 originally had the 12 point bolts to hold the u-joint straps on. I replaced them with the 6 point bolts just to reduce the PITA factor.
I got my bolts from Van Steel, they are a good source of information especially when you suspect the car may have been modified.
Looking at the yokes, it looks like if it were the strap type fasteners the yokes would need to be threaded to recieve the straps and bolts. If it were the bolts style it would not be threaded because the bolts just slid throught the yoke with a nut on the end . I think mine were probably the strap type but bubba stipped the treads and replaced with bolts. Sound right ??? Thanx Brent

Talk to the folks at Van Steel. FYI all the u-joints on my 1980 automatic L-48 are held by a stamped metal strap fastened by 12 point bolts. (except where bubba replaced a u-joint and used a socket head screw for one of the bolts)
I BELIEVE the automatics used the 12 point bolts and the 4-speed used 6 point bolts. As the 12 points bolt heads are easily rounded off, I replaced them with 6 point bolts (from Van Steel).
The automatics also use smaller u-joints (1310's) with smaller bolts than the manual cars which use 1350 u-joints. You can't mix & match. I changed the yokes and axles over to 1350's for the extra strength.
I'm pretty sure the automatic tranny setup with 1310 u-joints uses 12-point 1/4 -28 UNF bolts and the manual tranny setup with 1350 u-joints uses 6 point 5/16-24 UNF bolts.
yes, the larger ones are definitely the 5/16 24s because that's what I replaced them with, all 80,81 manuals and all 82s (only automatics) had the larger stubs.
