I just bought a 1975 Corvette Stingray that is in desperate need of a restoration. My plan is to do a complete frame off restoration as the frame has some pretty significant rust. I really think replacing the frame is the way to go, rather than trying to replace the one that I have. Where is the best place to get a used frame?
Where are you geographically? Depending on where you are, you can probably find a nice frame for under $2000.
Are you going to restore it or mod it? If you are going to mod it, you might consider a tube frame and C4 suspension. It would be quite expensive, but a lot of fun.
I'm Victoria, Texas about 125miles from Houston. I havent decided which way I'm going to go with the motor. The car has the original motor and transmission (not running needs an overhaul). There is definitley something to be said for keeping the original motor. But I am a horsepower nut and I am quite fond of the LS1 powerplant. The LS1 has so much available power with just a few modifications and is quite fuel efficient. My 2000 Trans Am dynoed just over 400rwhp with a cam headers, intake, tuning, and 4:10 gears, was running 11.50's with slicks @120. And it still got 21mpg on the highway.
You can buy all the frame components and repair your frame, depending on how bad it is. Replacing with a used one might be a good option for you though. There should be some decent frames in your area because you are out of the salty roads area. If the frame is really rusty you may have other issues with birdcage rust as well, something you should probably check into really well before spending a ton of money.
Sounds like a great candidate for a tube frame and C4 suspension. You can get a frame that the LS1 bolts right in with C4 rack-and-pinion steering. Corvette Fever had a story in Jan issue I believe on tube frames.
hey Maxum, i have a 75 vette with a great frame that i am planning to chop in half for a pro street car. maybe there is something here for us to talk about.
