engine pad question
Which numbers are larger on the C3 engine pad?
The first sequence (with engine code), or the second
set of numbers (with serial #).
Also,
Is the VIN tag on the windshield frame typically a little
rusty, or is this an indication that there is more rust
underneath?

On small block engines the ID code stamping appears on the inboard side of the pad, with the VIN stamping at the outboard side. On big blocks these two stamping locations are generally reversed. The engine ID code is a larger font.
Rust in the vin tag area is usually a sign of birdcage rust....it's one of the places to look for such a problem.
