Default How long is your dipstick?

Almost hate to ask this question, but better here than in OT. I did search and the last guy who asked never even got a straight answer. I was looking at ordering a chrome dipstick for my transmission and noticed there were 24" and 27". I then saw somewhere else where a 24" was for a TH400 and the 27" is for a TH350. I have a TH350. It also leaks from various different places depending upon what mood it is in. Now I am wondering If I have a too short dipstick (no coments here please) and too much fluid in my tranny. OK, have at it!

Allowing for the natural curvature of my dipstick, I'd say the 27 inches is correct. I just checked. I think I'll go and wash my hands now.

Oh and I've got a TH350 as well.

Uhhhhhh.....

I think you should just pull your dipstick out and measure it! Now you may want to shake of any excess goo on it, and make sure it is good and straight, and then measure it. I would measure it to right underneath where it flares out a bit! It's always more fun however, to get help when measuring your dipstick, as someone can hold it for you! If all fails and you can't get your dipstick straight enough to measure it properly, they make a special order dip stick renewal product that will straighten it out in a matter of minutes. Beware however, if it stays straight for more than 4 hrs., you may want to seek expert mechanical attention.

I just went out and measured my '77 with turbo 350.

27" from tip to the rubber seal inside the handle. This is a stock tube and dipstick.

Good luck,
Jeff

Not really. I think that Jeff has it right. 27" including the dip tube cover. All joking asside, there is a fair bowe to the stick that makes it hard to measure accurately with a tape measure. It clearly isn't 24" though.

You're supposed to measure on the top, not from underneath. You'll get falsely exaggerated measurements if you go from the bottom. Then he is sure to not know the accurate length for the product he is purchasing.

But why measure? I thought one size fits all.

Thanks for all the answers (i think). I did measure mine and it is 24" to the rubber gromet. Since I have been told by the PO (now affectionately known as POS) that the transmission was rebuilt at some time, it still makes me wonder if they installed the wrong dipstick at that time. And from a few other posts I have read I believe that if it has too much fluid it will leak. At one time I thought it was leaking where the shifter linkage entered the tranny case which is above the top of the pan. I think I will order the 27" stick and see how it works out. Anyone replaced these? Is the tube difficult to remove? Anyone else care to talk about their own dipstick?

Man.....don't even get me started on tube sizes matching up with dipsticks.......

I think we would all go for a longer, straighter, and stronger dipstick if we could afford it!!

I wasnt aware that there were any real aftermarket mods for weak dipsticks... I heard they were all snake oil scams...

your dipsticks size doesn't matter. it's how you use it. steer away from aftermarket products that claim they can lengthen your dipstick. also, excessive bowing in the dipstick is not uncommon in young dipsticks and usually resolves itself with age. also, pulling out your dipstick in public is not considered proper social etiquette so i would recommend you avoid this practice. finally, most dipsticks have had their tip trimmed at the factory but occasionally you'll see one without this modification. either one will get the job done.

Are all 27" dipsticks for the TH350 the same or do you need one that's Corvette specific?

as evidenced by this post....many people have different views on their Dipstick. some are content to check it out while doing routine maintenance while others feel a need to be constantly handling it and checking things to see if they have changed.
